The social and political ramifications of consumerism

Bill Moyers - Benjamin Barber interview

My partner Eric Anderson recently shared a fascinating Bill Moyers interview he caught just before Christmas.

In it, Moyers sits down with author and professor Benjamin Barber and discusses how capitalism creates too many goods that aren’t needed (and too few that are), and how children are targeted as consumers in a twenty-four hour marketplace.

Barber believes capitalism “seems quite literally to be consuming itself, leaving democracy in peril and the fate of citizens uncertain.”

As a marketer (even one evangelizing responsible marketing) it’s a bit disturbing. At over 22 minutes long, the interview is meaty, but well worth the time spent.

Check it out, then weigh in by commenting below.
