My 11-year-old sons love "Family Guy" and sometimes I catch my 44-year-old husband watching too. If guys between 10 and 50 are the target audience then it will work. If women are the target audience it will fail (think Stewie versus Oprah). I HATE "Family Guy," but I can't keep my kids from watching it unless I am in the room.

I believe that aiming ever lower is one of the reason TV is losing its audience. The crudeness is unavoidable because it pervades the promos that are part of almost every show. (And don't get me started on the amount of screen space devoted to hyping upcoming programs.)

MSNBC's Michael Ventre got it right in a recent column entitled, "Can I have my playoffs without the crotch grab?": http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24967809

LOVE the analogy between Family Guy and All in The Family --- the video clips are great! The All in The Family clip brings back memories, and you are correct how it relates to today....
